Groups

At a Gloucestershire Young Carers' group, young carers can meet and socialise with other young people with caring responsibilities.

There is no pressure to talk about their situation. They can relax, set aside their cares and worries and just be young for a couple of hours.

The young carers plan the activities of the group which may include music, cooking, sports, arts and crafts or taking an issue, for example drugs or alcohol and exploring it.

There are currently 11 groups in Gloucestershire. They are run either directly by Gloucestershire Young Carers or in partnership with other agencies such as Gloucestershire Youth Service. Meeting weekly or fortnightly. There are groups currently running all over the county in Cheltenham, Churchdown, Cam and Dursley, Gloucester, Forest of Dean, North Cotswold, Stroud and Tewkesbury. Groups are split according to age or may meet the needs of young carers from 8 - 16.

Matthew from Cheltenham Young Carers says -

"Ive just started Young Carers today and it's fun. I was very nervous about coming for the first time but it's great, I like coming here because everyone's really friendly and make me feel really welcome. If you read this, don't be scared to come to Young Carers, I did it and I'm glad I did. I'm looking forward to coming again. They do arts and crafts and they also go to different places like swimming."

Gloucestershire Young Carers also recently launched a group specifically for 16 - 25 year olds, recognising the very different needs of this age group. For more information click here. Transition Group

At Gloucestershire Young Carers we are constantly striving to respond to the cultural needs of young carers from the BME communities. As a first initiative an Asian Girls group has been set up which enables young Asian female carers to attend with their chaperones.

Many of the groups are for young carers who live in some of the more isolated areas of the county and this means they often find transport difficult. Gloucestershire Young Carers, therefore, is constantly appealing for more volunteers to drive these more isolated young carers to their local group. For more information on how to volunteer click here.
